Blood pressure is the force your blood exerts against the walls of your arteries as your heart pumps. It is recorded as two numbers: systolic pressure, which is the pressure when your heart beats, and diastolic pressure, which is the pressure when your heart rests between beats. A reading is expressed as systolic over diastolic, for example, 120 over 80.
A reading consistently at or above 140/90 mmHg is classified as high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. Readings between 120/80 and 139/89 are considered elevated and worth monitoring. High blood pressure is often called the silent killer because most people have no symptoms at all, even when readings are dangerously elevated. The only reliable way to know is to have it checked.
For a full clinical overview of high blood pressure and its risks, the NHS provides clear guidance at www.nhs.uk/conditions/high-blood-pressure-hypertension.
A blood pressure check is relevant to almost everyone, but it is particularly important if you:
Our pharmacists are trained to carry out accurate blood pressure checks and provide meaningful, actionable advice based on your results. Here is what to expect:
Your blood pressure is taken using a validated, clinically approved monitor. The appointment takes just a few minutes and requires no preparation on your part.
Your pharmacist will explain exactly what your reading means, whether it is within a healthy range, and what steps, if any, are recommended based on the result.
If a single reading suggests elevated blood pressure, we may recommend Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM). This involves wearing a small device that records your blood pressure automatically over 24 hours, giving a far more accurate picture of your typical readings throughout daily life.
If your reading is high, we will advise on lifestyle changes that can help and, where appropriate, recommend that you follow up with your GP. We can also provide a written summary of your results for your records or to share with your GP.
Do not wait for symptoms that may never come. Book your appointment today at any of our three branches and get a clear, professional assessment from our trained pharmacists. A few minutes of your time today could make a real difference to your health tomorrow.
A healthy blood pressure reading is generally considered to be below 120/80 mmHg. Readings between 120/80 and 139/89 are elevated and worth keeping an eye on. Anything consistently at or above 140/90 is classified as high blood pressure. Our pharmacists will explain your specific result in full and advise on the right course of action.
Adults over 40 are advised to have their blood pressure checked at least once every five years, or more frequently if previous readings have been elevated. If you already have a diagnosis of hypertension, your GP will advise on how often to monitor. In between formal checks, our pharmacists at Anna Pharmacy are always happy to take a reading.
Yes. Many people successfully manage high blood pressure through lifestyle changes alone, including reducing salt intake, exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol, and stopping smoking. Where lifestyle changes are not sufficient, a GP may prescribe medication. Early detection makes management significantly more straightforward.
ABPM (Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring) involves wearing a small monitor that records your blood pressure automatically over a 24-hour period. It is recommended when a single clinic reading is inconclusive or elevated, as it provides a much more accurate picture of your typical blood pressure in everyday life. If we feel ABPM would be beneficial after your check, we will discuss this with you at your appointment.
Yes, several factors can temporarily affect a reading, including anxiety, caffeine, exercise, smoking, and a full bladder. For the most accurate result, try to rest quietly for a few minutes before your appointment, avoid caffeine and smoking for at least 30 minutes beforehand, and use the toilet if needed. Our pharmacist will guide you through this when you arrive.
No referral is needed. You can book your blood pressure check directly online with Anna Pharmacy at a time that suits you. Many of our patients book simply for peace of mind; others come following a GP recommendation, and both are equally welcome.
