Hepatitis B is caused by a virus that lives in blood and certain body fluids. It can be transmitted through unprotected sexual contact, sharing needles or injecting equipment, accidental needlestick injuries, tattooing or piercing with unsterilised equipment, and blood transfusions in countries that do not screen for the virus.
The infection is more prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and the Pacific islands, the Middle East, parts of South America, and southern regions of central and eastern Europe.
Many people with Hepatitis B experience no symptoms at all, or only very mild ones. When symptoms do occur, they typically include:
Most acute infections resolve within one to three months. However, in some people the virus persists beyond six months, becoming a chronic infection that requires ongoing medical management. Chronic Hepatitis B can cause significant liver damage over time if left untreated, which is why early vaccination and prompt diagnosis matter.
The vaccine is typically given as a course of three injections over several months, though an accelerated schedule is available for those travelling at short notice. A completed course provides long-lasting protection.
Here is what to expect when you book your appointment with us:
Our pharmacist will review your health history, destination, and lifestyle factors to confirm whether the Hepatitis B vaccine is appropriate and which dosing schedule suits your timeline.
We will administer your vaccine, provide a clear record of doses given, and help you plan any follow-up appointments needed to complete the course before or after your trip.
Alongside vaccination, we will advise on practical measures to reduce your exposure risk, including safe sex, avoiding shared equipment, and choosing reputable practitioners for any medical, dental, or cosmetic procedures abroad.
