What Is Sinusitis?

Sinusitis occurs when the lining of the sinuses becomes inflamed and swollen, usually following a cold, flu, or allergic reaction. The sinuses are the small air-filled cavities behind your cheekbones, forehead, and nose. When they become inflamed, mucus cannot drain away properly, creating that familiar sensation of pressure, congestion, and facial discomfort.

Most cases are caused by a viral infection and clear up within two to four weeks, though some cases become chronic and persist for longer. For reliable clinical information on sinusitis and when to seek help, the NHS provides comprehensive guidance at www.nhs.uk/conditions/sinusitis-sinus-infection.

Signs and Symptoms of Sinusitis

Sinusitis symptoms can range from mildly uncomfortable to genuinely disruptive. The most common signs include:

You may also experience toothache, bad breath, a persistent cough, or a feeling of pressure in the ears. Some people snore more than usual or find their voice sounds nasal. In young children, watch out for irritability, difficulty feeding, or breathing through the mouth more than normal.

How Anna Pharmacy Can Help You Feel Better Sooner

Through Pharmacy First, our pharmacists can assess your sinusitis and recommend or prescribe treatment without the need for a GP. Here is what to expect when you come in:

A Thorough Assessment

Our pharmacist will review your symptoms, how long you have had them, and any relevant medical history to make sure sinusitis is the most likely diagnosis.

Treatment Options Available

Depending on your symptoms, we may recommend or prescribe steroid nasal sprays to reduce sinus inflammation, antihistamines if an allergy is thought to be contributing, or pain relief to manage facial pressure and headaches. Antibiotics are rarely needed for sinusitis, as it is most often viral, but we will discuss all options with you clearly.

Honest Advice on Next Steps

If your sinusitis has persisted beyond three weeks, keeps recurring, or shows signs that need GP or specialist review, we will tell you clearly and help you get to the right place quickly.

What You Can Do at Home

For mild sinusitis, there is plenty you can do at home to ease symptoms while your body recovers:

How to Make a Saline Nasal Rinse

Boil around 570ml of water and allow it to cool completely. Stir in one teaspoon of salt and one teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda. Then carefully sniff a small amount into each nostril over a sink, allowing it to drain back out naturally. Do this up to three times a day, making a fresh solution each time. It sounds unusual, but it genuinely helps.

Frequently asked questions

Most cases of sinusitis clear up within two to four weeks without treatment. If symptoms persist beyond three weeks despite home care or do not improve within seven days of pharmacy or GP treatment, it is worth getting reassessed. Chronic sinusitis, which lasts longer than twelve weeks, may need a referral to an ear, nose, and throat specialist.
In most cases, no. Sinusitis is almost always caused by a virus, which means antibiotics will not help and are not routinely prescribed. Treatment focuses on reducing inflammation and managing symptoms. Our pharmacists will only recommend antibiotics if there is strong clinical reason to do so.
Yes. Through NHS Pharmacy First, our pharmacists at Anna Pharmacy can assess sinusitis and prescribe treatments such as steroid nasal sprays and antihistamines directly. Patients aged 12 and over can use this service. For children under 12, a GP assessment is recommended.
Sinus headaches are closely linked to facial pressure and congestion, and they tend to worsen when you lean forward or lie down. Migraines typically involve throbbing pain, sensitivity to light and sound, and sometimes nausea, without the nasal and facial symptoms. If you are unsure which you are experiencing, our pharmacists can help you work it out.
Seek urgent help from NHS 111 or your GP if symptoms are severe, if painkillers are not working, if you feel very unwell, or if you have a weakened immune system. These situations may need a different approach to treatment and should not be left to resolve on their own.
Yes, recurring sinusitis is more common than many people realise, particularly in those with allergies or structural sinus issues. If you are experiencing repeated episodes, a GP may refer you to an ear, nose, and throat specialist to explore longer-term solutions, including the possibility of minor surgery to improve drainage.
