Tick-Borne Encephalitis Vaccine

Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE) Vaccine

Tick-borne encephalitis is a viral infection spread by tick bites in wooded and grassy areas across much of Europe and Asia. For most people the risk is low, but for travellers planning outdoor activities in higher-risk regions, vaccination provides important protection against a virus that can, in severe cases, affect the brain. At Anna Pharmacy, our pharmacists provide the TBE vaccine and expert travel health advice at our branches in Carshalton, Sutton, and Hackbridge. We also welcome patients from Croydon, Richmond, Epsom, Stoneleigh, and Wallington.

What Is Tick-Borne Encephalitis and Where Is It Found?

TBE is caused by a virus carried by certain ticks found in woodland, grassland, and scrubby vegetation across most of Europe, Russia, and parts of Asia including China and Japan. The virus can also, less commonly, be acquired by consuming unpasteurised milk or dairy products from infected animals.

Ticks infected with TBE are present in the UK, but the risk here is very low. The risk is considerably higher in parts of central and eastern Europe, Scandinavia, and Russia, particularly during warmer months when ticks are most active.

Who Needs the TBE Vaccine?

Vaccination is recommended for travellers heading to countries where TBE is prevalent who plan to spend time outdoors in wooded or rural areas. It is particularly relevant for those who are:

The vaccine requires a minimum of two injections given at least two weeks apart, with the first dose ideally completed at least one month before travel. A third dose given five to twelve months after the second provides longer-term protection. The TBE vaccine is a private vaccination and is not available on the NHS. Our pharmacists will advise on scheduling and costs at your appointment.

Signs and Symptoms of Tick-Borne Encephalitis

Most people infected with TBE have no symptoms. When they do appear, the illness often develops in two phases. The first phase typically begins around a week after a tick bite and includes:

These initial symptoms usually resolve on their own. In a small number of people, however, the virus progresses to affect the brain.

Warning signs of this more serious phase include a severe headache with a stiff neck, sensitivity to light, seizures, sudden confusion or slurred speech, and weakness in part of the body. If any of these develop after visiting a tick-risk area, call 999 or go to A&E immediately. TBE can be life-threatening and early treatment is critical.

Frequently asked questions

The TBE risk in urban areas is very low. Vaccination is primarily recommended for those planning outdoor activities in forested or rural areas where ticks are present. If your trip is entirely city-based, the vaccine is unlikely to be necessary, but our pharmacists will assess your specific itinerary and give you an honest recommendation.

Use fine-tipped tweezers or a tick removal tool and grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible. Pull upward slowly and firmly without twisting or crushing it. Clean the bite site with antiseptic or soap and water afterwards. If you develop flu-like symptoms or a circular rash in the weeks following a tick bite, contact your GP.
Yes, but the risk is very low. A small proportion of ticks in the UK carry the TBE virus, mostly in certain areas of southern England. The vast majority of TBE cases in UK travellers are acquired abroad. If you are planning significant outdoor activity in continental Europe, Russia, or Asia, vaccination is worth considering.
Yes. The TBE vaccine is compatible with most other travel vaccinations and can be given in the same appointment. Our pharmacists will coordinate your vaccination schedule to ensure everything fits efficiently around your travel dates.
Two doses provide protection for travel. A third dose given five to twelve months after the second extends protection for up to three years. Further booster doses every three to five years are recommended for those with continued exposure risk. Our pharmacists will advise on your specific booster schedule based on your travel frequency.
