A sore throat is one of those things that sounds minor but can make eating, drinking, and sleeping genuinely uncomfortable. But when the pain is persistent, getting worse, or you are concerned about your child, our pharmacists at Anna Pharmacy are here to help. We have branches in Carshalton, Sutton, and Hackbridge, and we also see patients from Croydon, Richmond, Epsom, Stoneleigh, and Wallington.

What Causes a Sore Throat?

The vast majority of sore throats are caused by viral infections such as the common cold or flu. In rarer cases, bacteria are responsible, including the bacteria that causes strep throat. Other causes include laryngitis, tonsillitis, glandular fever, and prolonged exposure to cigarette smoke or other irritants.

Understanding what is causing your sore throat matters, because viral and bacterial infections are treated very differently. Our pharmacists can help you work out which is more likely and advise on the right course of action. For a full clinical overview, the NHS provides clear guidance at www.nhs.uk/conditions/sore-throat.

Signs and Symptoms of a Sore Throat

Sore throat symptoms are familiar to most of us, but knowing what to look out for helps you judge whether home care is enough or whether it is time to seek advice. Common signs include:

Children may also develop a high temperature and become noticeably less active. In younger children especially, a sore throat combined with a high fever and difficulty swallowing warrants prompt attention.

How Anna Pharmacy Can Help You Recover Faster

Our pharmacists can assess your sore throat and provide the same treatment a GP would. Here is what visiting us looks like:

A Proper Clinical Assessment

Our pharmacist will assess your throat, ask about your symptoms and how long you have had them, and determine whether a bacterial infection is likely. This assessment guides everything that follows.

Antibiotic Treatment Where Needed

Antibiotics are not needed for the majority of sore throats and will not help if the cause is viral. However, if our pharmacist identifies signs of a bacterial infection, they can prescribe antibiotics, in exactly the same way a GP would.

Advice on Over-the-Counter Relief

We can also recommend the most appropriate pain relief and soothing treatments, including paracetamol or ibuprofen, medicated lozenges, and antiseptic sprays, and make sure they are safe for you or your child to take.

Clear Guidance on When to Escalate

If your situation needs a GP or urgent care, we will tell you straight away and help you understand what to do next. We are here to make sure you get the right care, whether that is from us or elsewhere.

What You Can Do at Home

For most sore throats, simple home care goes a long way while the infection runs its course:

Over-the-counter treatments such as paracetamol, ibuprofen, and medicated lozenges can help manage pain and discomfort. Always check the leaflet or speak to one of our pharmacists before taking anything, particularly if you are pregnant or giving medicine to a child.

Frequently asked questions

In most cases, no. The majority of sore throats are caused by viruses, and antibiotics have no effect on viral infections. Our pharmacists will only prescribe antibiotics if there are clear signs of a bacterial infection. Taking antibiotics unnecessarily can do more harm than good, so we take this assessment seriously.
Most sore throats caused by a viral infection improve on their own within five to seven days. If your sore throat is not getting better after a week, is worsening, or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms, book an appointment at Anna Pharmacy so we can assess what is going on.
Yes. Through NHS Pharmacy First, our pharmacists can assess and treat sore throats in adults and children aged five and over, including prescribing antibiotics where appropriate. For children under five, a GP assessment is recommended.
Book a GP appointment if your sore throat does not improve after a week, if you get sore throats frequently, or if you notice a lump in your mouth or neck or a mouth ulcer lasting more than three weeks. These symptoms need further investigation beyond what a pharmacy consultation covers.
Call 999 or go to A&E immediately if you or your child is having difficulty breathing, cannot swallow, is drooling, or is making a high-pitched noise when breathing. These are signs of a potentially serious airway problem that needs urgent medical attention.
Medicated lozenges containing antiseptic or anti-inflammatory ingredients can offer meaningful short-term relief from throat pain. Throat sprays containing local anaesthetic exist, but evidence for their effectiveness when used alone is limited. Our pharmacists can recommend the most suitable option for your specific symptoms.
