Japanese Encephalitis Vaccine

Japanese encephalitis is a rare but potentially serious viral infection transmitted by mosquito bites in parts of Asia. Most travellers to the region will never encounter it, but for those visiting rural areas, staying for extended periods, or spending time near rice paddies, wetlands, or pig farms, the risk is meaningfully higher. Vaccination is available and recommended for those heading into higher-risk situations. At Anna Pharmacy, our pharmacists provide the Japanese encephalitis vaccine as part of our travel health service. We have branches in Carshalton, Sutton, and Hackbridge, and we welcome patients from Croydon, Richmond, Epsom, Stoneleigh, and Wallington.

What Is Japanese Encephalitis and Where Is It Found?

Japanese encephalitis is caused by a virus spread through bites from infected mosquitoes, primarily in rural and agricultural settings. It is not present in the UK and is rare in travellers overall, but the consequences when it does occur can be severe. The virus is found across much of Asia, including India, China, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, and countries throughout South-East Asia such as Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia. The risk is highest in rural areas during and after the monsoon season, when mosquito populations peak.

Who Needs the Japanese Encephalitis Vaccine?

Vaccination is recommended for travellers heading to areas where the virus is present, particularly if you are:

The vaccine is given as two injections, usually spaced 28 days apart, with both doses ideally completed before travel. It is a private vaccination and is not available on the NHS. Our pharmacists will advise on scheduling, costs, and whether an accelerated schedule may be possible if your trip is at short notice.

Signs and Symptoms of Japanese Encephalitis

The majority of people infected with Japanese encephalitis have no symptoms at all. When they do appear, they typically begin as a mild flu-like illness and include:

In most cases these symptoms resolve without serious consequence. However, in a small number of people the virus progresses to affect the brain. If you or a fellow traveller develops any of the following after visiting a risk area, call 999 or seek emergency hospital care immediately:
Japanese encephalitis can cause long-term neurological complications, including paralysis and loss of speech, which makes early intervention critical.

How Anna Pharmacy Can Help You Travel Safely

Here is what to expect when you book your travel health appointment with us:

A Travel Health Assessment

Our pharmacist will review your destination, planned activities, length of stay, and health history to assess your risk level and confirm whether the Japanese encephalitis vaccine is recommended for your trip.

Vaccination and Dose Scheduling

We will administer your vaccine and help you plan the second dose to ensure the course is completed in time for departure. We will also advise on what to expect after the injection and when to seek advice if you have any concerns.

Bite Prevention Guidance

Vaccination reduces but does not eliminate risk, so bite prevention remains important. We will advise on DEET-based repellents, appropriate clothing, and the use of insecticide-treated bed nets for your specific destinations and travel style.

Frequently asked questions

The standard course requires two doses 28 days apart, so ideally you should book well in advance of departure. If time is short, speak to our pharmacists and we will advise on the best available options for your timeline. Some protection from a single dose is better than none.
Yes. It can be given alongside most other travel vaccinations. Our pharmacists will coordinate your vaccination schedule to ensure everything fits efficiently around your travel dates.
There is no specific antiviral treatment for Japanese encephalitis. Hospital care focuses on managing symptoms and supporting recovery. Because serious cases can cause lasting neurological damage, prevention through vaccination and bite avoidance is by far the better approach.
If you are visiting only urban areas, staying for a short period, and avoiding rural or agricultural environments, the risk is considered low, and vaccination may not be essential. However, if your itinerary includes rural locations, extended stays, or outdoor activities, the risk increases significantly, and vaccination is strongly recommended. Our pharmacists will assess your specific plans and give you an honest recommendation.
Protection from a completed two-dose course is estimated to last for at least a year, with a booster dose recommended if you continue to travel to risk areas. Long-term durability is still being studied, but current guidance suggests a booster after 12 to 24 months for those with ongoing exposure risk. Our pharmacists will advise on timing based on your travel history and future plans.
