Typhoid Vaccine

Typhoid Vaccine and Travel Health Advice

Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection spread through contaminated food and water in many parts of the world. Left untreated it can cause serious complications, but vaccination offers effective protection and is readily available. If you are travelling to a higher-risk destination, getting vaccinated at least six to eight weeks before departure is one of the most sensible steps you can take. At Anna Pharmacy, our pharmacists provide the typhoid vaccine at our branches in Carshalton, Sutton, and Hackbridge. We also welcome patients from Croydon, Richmond, Epsom, Stoneleigh, and Wallington.

What Is Typhoid Fever and Where Is It Found?

Typhoid fever is caused by Salmonella Typhi bacteria, which spreads when food or water is contaminated with the faeces of an infected person. It is found across parts of Asia, Africa, and Central and South America. In the UK, the majority of cases occur in people who have recently travelled to India, Pakistan, or Bangladesh, though the risk exists across a broader range of destinations.

Even in destinations where typhoid is present, good food and water hygiene significantly reduces your risk alongside vaccination. For country-specific information, Travel Health Pro provides up-to-date guidance.

Who Needs the Typhoid Vaccine?

Vaccination is recommended for anyone over one year old travelling to an area where typhoid is a risk. It is particularly important for those visiting South Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and parts of Central and South America. The vaccine is available free on the NHS for eligible travellers and comes in two forms:

Ideally you should be vaccinated six to eight weeks before travel to allow full immunity to develop. If your trip is sooner, vaccination is still worthwhile. Our pharmacists will advise on the most suitable form of vaccine for you and ensure your course is completed in time for departure.
It is important to note that neither form of the typhoid vaccine is 100 per cent effective. Good hygiene practices when travelling, including careful attention to food and water safety, remain essential alongside vaccination.

Signs and Symptoms of Typhoid Fever

Symptoms of typhoid typically develop within three weeks of infection, though they can take up to six weeks to appear. They include:

If typhoid is not treated, it can lead to serious complications including internal bleeding or peritonitis. If you have been to a risk area and feel unwell, contact your GP and mention your travel history, even if you were vaccinated. If you develop sudden severe abdominal pain, black or dark red stools, or vomit blood, call 999 or go to A&E immediately.

Both forms offer comparable protection for up to three years. The injection is a single dose and is generally more convenient. The oral course requires taking capsules on alternate days over several days and must be stored in the fridge. Our pharmacists will discuss both options and recommend the most suitable one based on your health, schedule, and preferences.
Yes, it is possible. Neither form of the typhoid vaccine is 100 per cent effective, which is why food and water hygiene remains important even after vaccination. If you feel unwell after returning from a risk area, always seek medical advice and mention your travel history.
Yes. The typhoid injection can be given at the same time as most other travel vaccinations. The oral typhoid capsules should not be taken at the same time as certain antibiotics or antimalarials, so it is important to let our pharmacists know your full medication plan when you book.
Both the injection and the oral course provide protection for up to three years. If you are a frequent traveller to risk areas, a booster before each trip is recommended once your previous vaccination has lapsed. Our pharmacists will advise on timing based on your travel history.
Six to eight weeks before travel is ideal, as this gives the vaccine time to provide full protection before your departure. If your trip is sooner, vaccination is still very worthwhile. Book as early as you can and we will work with your timeline.
