What Is the DTP Vaccine?

The DTP vaccine, also known as the Td/IPV vaccine or 3-in-1 teenage booster, protects against diphtheria, tetanus, and polio. It boosts the protection given in earlier childhood vaccinations, reinforcing immunity and extending it into adulthood.

Diphtheria is a bacterial infection affecting the throat that can cause serious breathing difficulties and damage to the heart and nervous system. Though rare in the UK, it remains a risk in some parts of the world.

Tetanus, sometimes called lockjaw, enters the body through cuts or wounds and causes severe muscle spasms that can affect breathing. It is not passed between people.

Polio is a viral infection that can cause paralysis in severe cases. While largely eliminated in the UK, it persists in certain countries and poses a risk to unvaccinated travellers.

For further clinical guidance, the NHS provides information at www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinations.

Who Needs the DTP Vaccine?

The DTP booster is part of the NHS routine vaccination schedule and is also recommended in certain adult situations. You may need the vaccine if you are:

The vaccine is suitable for most people, including those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, but cannot be given to anyone with a previous serious allergic reaction to the vaccine or its components.

The routine teenage booster is free on the NHS for those who missed it at school. For travel or other adult requirements, it is available as a private vaccination at Anna Pharmacy.
