Where Is Malaria Found?

Malaria is not found in the UK, but it is prevalent across large parts of the world. High-risk regions include sub-Saharan Africa, South and South-East Asia, Central and South America, parts of the Caribbean, the Middle East, and some Pacific islands. A single mosquito bite from an infected insect is all it takes.

If you were born or previously lived in a high-risk country but have settled in the UK, your natural immunity will have faded. You need the same precautions as any other traveller. For country-specific risk information, Travel Health Pro provides authoritative guidance at travelhealthpro.org.uk/factsheet/52/malaria.

How Anna Pharmacy Can Help You Travel Safely

Book your travel health appointment at least four to six weeks before departure. If your trip is sooner, do not delay. Here is what to expect when you book with us:

A Personalised Travel Health Assessment

Our pharmacist will review your destination, itinerary, and health history to determine your malaria risk and the most suitable antimalarial medication for you.

Antimalarial Prescription and Dispensing

Different antimalarials suit different destinations and individuals. We can prescribe and dispense the right option for your trip, and explain exactly when to start, how to take it, and when to stop after returning home.

Bite Prevention Advice

No medication is 100 per cent protective, so bite prevention is equally important. We will advise on DEET-based repellents, appropriate clothing for evening wear, and the correct use of insecticide-treated bed nets.

Wider Travel Health Support

We can also advise on vaccinations relevant to your destination, so everything you need for a safe trip is covered in one appointment.

Frequently asked questions

Ideally four to six weeks before travel, as some antimalarials need to be started one to two weeks before departure. If your trip is imminent, book as soon as possible. Last-minute advice is far better than no preparation at all.
No. Different medications are recommended depending on your destination, the type of malaria parasite present, local resistance patterns, and your individual health history. Our pharmacists will recommend the most appropriate option for your specific trip.
Yes. If you have been living in the UK for some time, your immunity to malaria will have faded. You should take the same precautions as any other traveller, including antimalarial medication and consistent bite prevention measures.
Antimalarials for travel are not routinely available on the NHS and are usually provided as a private prescription. Our pharmacists will be transparent about costs during your consultation so there are no surprises.
Seek medical attention immediately and tell your healthcare provider or NHS 111 about your travel history. Malaria symptoms can appear weeks or months after returning home, so always mention recent travel, even if some time has passed.
A malaria vaccine exists but is not yet available for UK travellers. Antimalarial tablets combined with effective bite prevention remain the recommended approach. Our pharmacists will advise on the best current options for your destination.
