What Is Cholera and Where Is It Found?

Cholera is caused by a bacterium that spreads primarily through contaminated water and food. It is not present in the UK and poses a very low risk to the average tourist, but it remains a concern in parts of Africa, Asia, and other regions where clean water infrastructure is limited or has been disrupted by natural disaster or conflict.

The infection is most commonly acquired by drinking unclean water, eating food rinsed or prepared with contaminated water, consuming shellfish or seafood from affected waters, or through contact with an infected person’s food preparation.

How Anna Pharmacy Group Can Help You Stay Safe

Our pharmacists are trained in travel health and can advise on your specific risk based on your destination and travel plans. Here is what to expect when you book your appointment:

A Travel Health Assessment

Our pharmacist will review your destination, planned activities, and health history to assess your cholera risk and advise on whether vaccination is recommended for your trip.

Cholera Vaccination Where Appropriate

The cholera vaccine is given as a drink and provides strong protection when both doses are completed. Two doses, given 1 to 6 weeks apart, can protect for up to 2 years. Both doses should be completed at least a week before departure. Our pharmacists will advise on whether the vaccine is suitable for you and help you access it.

Food and Water Safety Guidance

Regardless of vaccination status, safe food and water practices are the most important protection against cholera. We will give you clear, practical guidance on what to drink, what to avoid, and how to handle food safely when travelling in at-risk regions.

Wider Travel Health Support

Cholera advice is part of our full travel health service. We can also advise on other vaccinations and antimalarials relevant to your destination.

Frequently asked questions

Most travellers do not. The vaccine is mainly recommended for those travelling to remote areas without reliable medical access or for aid and relief workers heading to regions experiencing a cholera outbreak. Our pharmacists will assess your specific itinerary and advise whether vaccination is appropriate for you.
The cholera vaccine is given as an oral drink rather than an injection. For adults, two doses are required, spaced between one and six weeks apart. Both doses must be completed at least a week before you travel for full protection, which can last up to two years.
In some cases, yes. If the vaccine is clinically recommended for your trip, you may be entitled to it free of charge on the NHS. Our pharmacists will advise on your eligibility during your consultation and help you access it through the right channel.
Cholera causes profuse watery diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal discomfort. The main danger is rapid dehydration, which can become serious very quickly. If you develop these symptoms in or after visiting a cholera risk area, seek medical attention promptly and tell the doctor where you have been.
The primary treatment is prompt and thorough rehydration using oral rehydration salts, which replace the fluids and minerals lost through diarrhoea. In severe cases, hospital treatment with intravenous fluids and antibiotics may be needed. Oral rehydration sachets are available from our pharmacy and are sensible to carry on any trip to a risk area.
At least four to six weeks before departure where possible to allow time for both doses of the cholera vaccine to be completed with the required gap between them. If your trip is sooner, please book as soon as you can. We will do everything we can to prepare you in the time available.
