Dengue Fever Vaccine and Travel Health Advice

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection found across much of the tropical and subtropical world. For most people it is an unpleasant but manageable illness, though in some cases it can become serious. If you are travelling to a destination where dengue is common, getting the right advice before you go is one of the most sensible things you can do. At Anna Pharmacy, our pharmacists provide expert dengue travel health advice and vaccination as part of our travel clinic. We have branches in Carshalton, Sutton, and Hackbridge, and we welcome patients from Croydon, Richmond, Epsom, Stoneleigh, and Wallington.

What Is Dengue Fever and Where Is It Found?

Dengue fever is caused by a virus transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes, which are active during the day rather than at night. It is not found in the UK and cannot be passed directly from person to person. However, it is widespread in tropical regions, including large parts of Africa, Asia, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and the Pacific islands.

It is also worth noting that dengue has been identified at certain times of year in parts of southern Europe, including Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, Croatia, and Madeira, so it is not exclusively a concern for long-haul travel. For destination-specific dengue risk information, Travel Health Pro provides up-to-date guidance.

Symptoms of Dengue Fever

Not everyone who contracts dengue will develop noticeable symptoms. When they do appear, it is typically four to ten days after the mosquito bite. Common symptoms include:

Severe Dengue

In some cases, dengue can become severe a few days after symptoms begin, even as the fever starts to improve. Warning signs include severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, breathing difficulties, bleeding, extreme fatigue, or blood in vomit or stools. Seek urgent medical attention immediately if these symptoms develop.

How Anna Pharmacy Can Help You Stay Protected

Our pharmacists are trained in travel health and can provide personalised dengue advice based on your destination and travel plans. Here is what to expect when you book your appointment:

A Travel Health Assessment

Our pharmacist will review your destination, itinerary, and health history to assess your dengue risk and advise on the most appropriate preventive measures for your trip.

Dengue Vaccination Where Appropriate

A dengue vaccine is available privately and is recommended for travellers who have previously had dengue or may have been exposed to it in the past and who are travelling to high-risk areas. Our pharmacists will assess your suitability and advise on whether the vaccine is right for you.

Bite Prevention Advice

Because the mosquitoes that spread dengue are active during daylight hours, standard bite avoidance advice differs slightly from malaria prevention. We will give you specific guidance on repellents, clothing, and other practical measures suited to dengue risk.

Wider Travel Health Support

Dengue advice sits within our broader travel health service. We can cover all your health needs for a trip in a single appointment, saving you time and making sure nothing is missed.

Stay Protected Against Dengue While Travelling with Anna Pharmacy

Good preparation before you travel makes a real difference. Book your travel health appointment at any of our three branches, and our pharmacists will make sure you are properly protected for wherever you are heading.

Frequently asked questions

The dengue vaccine is recommended for travellers who have previously had dengue, or who may have had it without realising, and who are planning to travel to a high-risk destination. It is not routinely recommended for first-time dengue travellers. Our pharmacists will assess your history and advise whether the vaccine is appropriate for you.
No. The dengue vaccine is currently only available privately. Our pharmacists will advise on the cost during your consultation so there are no surprises.
Avoiding mosquito bites is the most reliable protection. Wear long-sleeved clothing and full-length trousers during early morning and early evening when dengue mosquitoes are most active. Use a DEET-based insect repellent on exposed skin, keep windows and doors closed or screened where possible, and sleep under an insecticide-treated mosquito net, including during daytime naps.
Seek medical attention promptly and tell your GP or NHS 111 about your recent travel. Dengue symptoms can develop up to ten days after being bitten, and early assessment ensures you receive appropriate monitoring and care. Do not take ibuprofen or aspirin to manage symptoms, as these can worsen bleeding risks associated with dengue.
There is no specific antiviral treatment for dengue. Most people recover with rest, adequate fluids, and paracetamol to manage fever and discomfort. Severe dengue requires hospital care. The focus is on prevention and supportive care, which is why getting proper travel health advice before you go matters.
Yes, to a limited extent. Cases of dengue have been identified in parts of southern Europe, including Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, Croatia, and Madeira, typically during warmer months from spring to autumn. While the risk is considerably lower than in tropical destinations, it is worth being aware of if you are travelling to these areas during peak season.
