Sinusitis occurs when the lining of the sinuses becomes inflamed and swollen, usually following a cold, flu, or allergic reaction. The sinuses are the small air-filled cavities behind your cheekbones, forehead, and nose. When they become inflamed, mucus cannot drain away properly, creating that familiar sensation of pressure, congestion, and facial discomfort.
Most cases are caused by a viral infection and clear up within two to four weeks, though some cases become chronic and persist for longer. For reliable clinical information on sinusitis and when to seek help, the NHS provides comprehensive guidance at www.nhs.uk/conditions/sinusitis-sinus-infection.
Sinusitis symptoms can range from mildly uncomfortable to genuinely disruptive. The most common signs include:
You may also experience toothache, bad breath, a persistent cough, or a feeling of pressure in the ears. Some people snore more than usual or find their voice sounds nasal. In young children, watch out for irritability, difficulty feeding, or breathing through the mouth more than normal.
Through Pharmacy First, our pharmacists can assess your sinusitis and recommend or prescribe treatment without the need for a GP. Here is what to expect when you come in:
Our pharmacist will review your symptoms, how long you have had them, and any relevant medical history to make sure sinusitis is the most likely diagnosis.
Depending on your symptoms, we may recommend or prescribe steroid nasal sprays to reduce sinus inflammation, antihistamines if an allergy is thought to be contributing, or pain relief to manage facial pressure and headaches. Antibiotics are rarely needed for sinusitis, as it is most often viral, but we will discuss all options with you clearly.
If your sinusitis has persisted beyond three weeks, keeps recurring, or shows signs that need GP or specialist review, we will tell you clearly and help you get to the right place quickly.
For mild sinusitis, there is plenty you can do at home to ease symptoms while your body recovers:
Boil around 570ml of water and allow it to cool completely. Stir in one teaspoon of salt and one teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda. Then carefully sniff a small amount into each nostril over a sink, allowing it to drain back out naturally. Do this up to three times a day, making a fresh solution each time. It sounds unusual, but it genuinely helps.
